In the beginning, there were no LGBTQ people in the movies—at least, not overtly so. A handful of provocative pre-Code examples aside, until the 1960s the only way to get a film featuring characters coded with stereotypically gay or lesbian traits past the professional moralists at the MPAA was to posit “sex perversion” as an unequivocal social ill, sure to lead to madness, criminality, and death. And showing those characters in relationships, or even suggesting that they might be anything other than tortured and celibate? Forget it!
